I have already watched Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, and I love all the characters. But, I must say, that the Minions are the most loved characters in the movies. In fact, due to their popularity, a stand-alone prequel/spin-off movie was made for them. Their Official Trailer has just been released recently, and their movie, Minions (2015), will be showing next year. But, more than the laughs, and the cuddliness (that we would wanna die), we haven't thought about their essence not just to Gru, to the the film, but also an inspiration to all of us. As I watched the trailer, I came to the realization that their personalities can be a role model for us.
As per Wikipedia, generally, a minion is a 'loyal servant of another, usually more powerful, being.' All that we know is that Minions are created by Dr. Gru to be his servants while doing villainous things to be known as the World's Most Evil Villain. However, in the prequel, it was explained that minions are actually 'yellow henchmen who have existed since the beginning of time, evolving from yellow single-celled organisms into beings who have only one purpose: to serve history's most ambitious villains.'
After their previous master accidentally perished due to their mischiefs, Kevin, Bob, and Stuart are on an adventure all the way from Antarctica to New York to find their next master, as the whole minion race finds themselves isolated and depressed - fearing for their extinction because of loss purpose. And this was around 46 years B.G. (Before Gru).
As we focus on the so-called Minions' purpose: to serve their master. It means that they will just serve their master until the end of their lives. Meaning, that these henchmen were actually loyal to whoever their master was. And to have an advanced realization, they have found Gru as their master, in fact, Gru (based on the Despicable Me movies) has considered them family, apart from his adopted daughters.
Just like our Heavenly Father, we have been searching for our masters - money, fame, power, etc. But, even to them, we are not entirely faithful, and we are serving the wrong master. As God has reminded us, He is the one who created us, saved us, and sustains us every day. And in fact, He considers us friends, rather than servants. As Gru showed to his minions in Despicable Me 2, God, through Jesus Christ, will offer His life for us - His friends.
But, what we can really learn from the Minions?
Loyalty. As you watch the trailer, you will see how these Minions were loyal to their masters, they put their trust in them; did everything that the master asked, and even loved their master by being thoughtful to them. It is just that they are full of mischief.
Passion. Ready to go what the Master asked. Having the passionate heart to fulfill the Master's will.
Through the Minions, loyalty, and passion, we may be also inspired to be good servants to our Master - Our Lord Jesus Christ. But, just for the record, He is not just our Master, in fact, He is also our friend. Therefore, we are not just servants alone indeed, we are also His friends.
I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. - John 15:15
